Synopsis
Bilbo Baggins
is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable and quiet life. His contentment is
disturbed one day when the wizard, Gandalf, and the dwarves arrive to take him
away on an adventure.
Smaug
certainly looked fast asleep, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He
was just about to step out on to the floor when he caught a sudden thin ray of
red from under the drooping lid of Smaug’s left eye. He was only pretending to
sleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance!
Whisked from
his comfortable hobbit-hole by Gandalf the wizard and a band of dwarves. Bilbo
Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug
the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon…

Jemima Catlin, ancora ventiseienne, cercava uno speciale
progetto che le permettesse di completare il suo corso di laurea in
comunicazione visiva presso l'Arts University Bournemouth. Amando Tolkien – il
suo primo libro, a 12 anni, fu Lo Hobbit – decide di illustrare uno dei
racconti brevi dell'autore, Roverandom.
Illustra la storia e invia, assieme al testo, il tutto
all’editore inglese HarperCollins. Il direttore responsabile David Brawn è
colpito dalle illustrazione e la invita in casa editrice per poi inviare il
tutto alla Tolkien Estate.
A Christopher Tolkien piacciono molto le sue illustrazioni, ma risponde
che non riflettono con precisione la visione di suo padre. Ma, un anno dopo, riceve
una mail da David Brawn dove le si dice che Christopher Tolkien le chiede se
poteva presentare alcune illustrazioni per Lo Hobbit.
Dopo diversi anni, e soprattutto dopo il monopolio visivo del
lavoro cinematografico di Peter Jackson, finalmente l’HarperCollins ritorna a
pubblicare un’edizione dello Hobbit veramente dedicata ai più piccoli nel
miglior spirito tolkieniano.
Il risultato, com’è possibile vedere, è eccezionale e le
illustrazioni della Catlin sono meravigliosamente evocative. Guardandole
ricordano molto quelle dello stesso Tolkien. Questa, senza dubbio, è la più
bella edizione dello Hobbit dopo quella illustrata dal suo autore.
Un volume che merita davvero attenzione da parte degli
appassionati lettori e collezionisti tolkieniani.
