Poetry (fondata come Poetry: A Magazine of Verse), è stata
pubblicata per la prima volta a Chicago nel 1912, ed è una delle principali
riviste mensili di poesia nel mondo di lingua inglese. Pubblicata dalla Poetry Foundation, oggi Don Share, la rivista ha una tiratura di
30 mila copie, e stampa 300 poesie all’anno. Nel 2003, la rivista ha ricevuto
un lascito di 200 milioni dollari da Ruth Lilly, filantropa americana scomparsa
nel 2009, che in parte hanno finanziato la costruzione del Poetry Center in Near
North Side, Chicago. Il Centro, inaugurato nel 2011, ospita una biblioteca
aperta al pubblico, spazi di lettura e ospita gruppi scolastici e turistici, e
offre l'ufficio e lo spazio editoriale alla Poetry
Foundation e alla rivista.

Kennedy è un poeta, traduttore,
antologista, curatore e autore di letteratura per l'infanzia e testi sulla
letteratura e la poesia inglese. È stato a lungo conosciuto come Joe Kennedy ma, volendo distinguersi da
Joseph P. Kennedy, ha preferito aggiungere una "X", come la sua prima
iniziale.
Da ragazzo, sotto il nome di Joe
Kennedy, è stato un membro attivo della comunità Science fiction fandom e ha pubblicato in diverse tra cui Vampire (trimestrale, 1945-1947) e le Vampire Annuals. È stato membro di
diverse associazioni di riviste amatoriali, e co-fondato l'ancora esistente Spectator Amateur Press Association
(SAPS). Ha frequentato Seton Hall (1950)
e la Columbia University (1951), poi
alla Sorbona (1955-56) laureandosi in Inglese presso l'Università del Michigan.
Ha insegnato inglese alla University of
Michigan, la University of North
Carolina, a Greensboro, Tufts
University (1963-1978), con cattedre in visita a Wellesley, UC-Irvine , e Leeds Qui il suo sito personale.
Direttore della rivista in questo
periodo è Henry Rago (1955-69).
