Calendari tolkieniani

Negli ultimi anni di vita di Tolkien, quando diventava evidente che non avrebbe prodotto più alcun titoli significativo, Allen and Unwin cercò altri modi per approfittare della straordinario interesse che si erano sviluppato attornpo al professore oxoniense e la Terra di Mezzo. I loro primi tentatvi furono dei manifesti - una mappa della Terra di Mezzo, e poi There and Back Again and Bilbo's Last Song - che aveva riscosso un successo limitato.

All'inizio del 1973 AU decise che il calendario potresse essere un buon prodotto. Scelsero alcune illustrazioni già pubblicate da Lo Hobbit insieme a una serie di immagini che illustravano Il Signore degli Anelli e anche uno o due per il Silmarillion allora inedite. Il calendario 1974 riscosse un successo e, dopo una pausa nel 1975, furono prodotti quattro calendari 1976-1979 con più illustrazioni di Tolkien. I disegni e dipinti sono stati poi raccolti nel 1979 e pubblicati nel libro Immagini di J.R.R. Tolkien.

Le illustrazioni di Tolkien presto si esaurirono, ma l'adattamento animato di Ralph Bakshi del Signore degli Anelli, venne in soccorso e un altro calendario con le foto del film venne prodotto nel 1980. Dopo questo ci fu un'altra pausa fino a quando Rayner Unwin rnon riuscì a convincere la Tolkien Estate a dare il consenso ad utilizzare illustrazioni di altri artisti per i successivi calendari.

Allen and Unwin aveva iniziato a utilizzare Roger Garland per illustrare le copertine di libri tascabili di Tolkien e quindi il primo fu lui con il calendario del 1984. Mentre negli Stati Uniti il primo fu Tim Kirk, per il calendario del 1975 pubblicato dalla Ballantine Books. Inger Edelfeldt seguì nel 1985 e nel 1986 il calendario venne caratterizzato da alcune delle illustrazioni di Michael Hague per Lo Hobbit. Molti altri artisti hanno contribuito con propri lavori negli anni successivi come i fratelli Hildebrandt, Alan Lee, John Howe e Ted Nasmith.

Per poter esporre i primi calendari - quelli più interessanti che vanno dal 1974 al 1980 - ho creato un pannello ad hoc.

L'espositore è composto da un pannello in legno 38 x 140 e delle bacchette in ottone per bloccare i calendari. Sul pannelo di legno vi ho fatto stampare un'immagine da me eleaborata e che potete guardare qui sotto.

Readers of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien have enjoyed the Calendars for the years 1973 e 1974 which used the artwork of J.R.R. Tolkien himself, with maps by Pauline Baynes.

For 1975 we offer the work of a famous fan artist, TIM KIRK, a devoted admirer of J.R.R. Tolkien. Because of his great admiration for the work of Professor Tolkien, Mr. Kirk has created A Portfolio for Middle-earth, using as his inspiration themes from 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the RIngs', originally published by George Allen and Unwin, Ldt., and Houghton Mifflin Company. The illustrations in this Calendar have not been endorsed by the late Professor Tolkien or his heirs.

We hope to find other artists who are inspired to do their own conceptions of Middle-earth so that well shall be able to offer Calendars for future years.
