Private Eye è una rivista satirica britannica quindicinale, curata da Ian Hislop. Fin dalla sua prima uscita nel 1961, Private Eye è considerata incompetente e inefficiente, ed è diventata una sedicente "spina nel fianco" della società britannica per il suo stile e per la sua disponibilità a pubblicare storie diffamatorie e controverse.
Questo ritrova riscontro nelle molteplici diffamazione legali per le quali è diventata famosa. Anche se molto discussa, è presente da moltissimi anni sulla scena e molte sue battute o modi di dire sono entrati nel comune dire inglese.
Nel 1976 è stato pubblicato un volumetto "The Best of Private Eye" che faceva il verso a "The Lord of the Rings". Oltre al titolo ironico "Lord Gnome of the Rings" la copertina riproduceva l'immagine di LOTR edito da George Allen and Unwin nel 1968. La stessa riprodotta sul disco inciso da J.R.R. Tolkien e Donald Swann nel 1967.
