Per celebrare il 75° anniversario della pubblicazione di ‘The Hobbit’, l’HarperCollins ha pubblicato questo splendido tascabile nel mese di ottobre del 2011.
Un libro davvero splendido nella trama e in questa edizione. Con le sue piccole misure 115 x 155 mm risulta tascabile e si conferma il primo volume di questa dimensioni con la storica sovraccoperta disegnata da Tolkien per la prima edizione del 1937. Un libro nato per commemorare i primi 75 anni delle avventure di Bilbo Baggins!
Ricordo anche l’edizione, molto più grande e con cofanetto, realizzata nel 2008 per celebrare il 70° anniversario. Anche quella, un’edizione per collezionisti merita la nostra attenzione.

Il volume presenta la Prefazione del figlio di Tolkien, Christopher, datata 1987 e apparsa per la prima volta nell’edizione de The Hobbit per il 50° anniversario della pubblicazione.
La sovraccoperta è stampata con i colori nero, blu, verde e rosso con tonalità sul grigio su sfondo bianco. Questa ritrae la prima edizione di The Hobbit che in realtà non venne utilizzata per via dei costi. Infatti, la prima edizione andata in libreria, presentava il sole e il drago di color bianco.

J.R.R. Tolkien was born on January 3rd 1892. Apart from his long and distinguished academic career, he is best known for his extraordinary works of fiction The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin. His works have been translated into over 50 languages worldwide. He was awarded the CBE, and an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Oxford University in 1972. He died in 1973 at the age of 81.
The cover of this edition of The Hobbit is based on Tolkien’s own dustjacket design for the first edition. Printed in just blue, green and black, Tolkien’s wish that the sun and the dragon be red was dropped originally because of cost. The wraparound painting was designed around the long road (on the spine) through the forest to the Lonely Mountains. On the back are night, darkness, and the evil dragon, in contrast to day, light, and the good eagles seen on the front.
